Electricity is highly dangerous! Never attempt any DIY unless you are absolutely sure you understand what you are doing.
- Blowing fuses - Never replace a blown fuse with one of a higher rating. A fuse which keeps blowing indicates a fault which must be investigated.
- Blowing lamps (bulbs) - This can happen for a variety of reasons ranging from poor quality lamps to old or sub-standard fittings.
- Halogen lighting - Halogen lamps generate a lot of heat. Careful consideration needs to be taken during the design and installation of these systems.
- Buzzing light fitting - This can indicate a loose connection and should be dealt with as soon as possible.
- Buzzing dimmer switch - Excessively loud buzzing often indicates the wrong choice of switch for the number or type of lights being controlled.
- Visible damage - Scorching (black or brown marks) or any sign of excessive heat indicates a serious fault and should be dealt with immediately. Cracked or damaged sockets and switches should be replaced as soon as possible. Most standard fittings are made from brittle plastic which can shatter easily exposing live parts.
